The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) Program is a cooperative effort between the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadrons.

What is a Vessel Safety Check?
A VSC is a free check for boaters who wish to be sure that their vessel meets all federal and state equipment requirements.  The VSC is not a boarding or law enforcement issue.  No citations will be given during the safety check.  The boater will be handed a copy of the completed evaluation so that they may follow some of the suggestions provided.  Vessels that pass will be able to display the distinctive VSC decal.  This decal does not exempt the boater from routine law enforcement boarding, but makes any on-the-water encounter more positive.

Why is an annual Vessel Safety Check important?
There are approximately 13 million registered recreational boats in the United States, and less than 1% are checked each year.  VSCs alert boaters to potential safety problems before they find out on the water.  Of over 100,000 vessels checked, over 25% failed to meet federal and state requirements!  Recreational boaters are usually glad that they found out through the program.

What do Vessel Examiners look for?
Vessel examiners have been trained to look mainly for some of the more common problems, which might occur on vessels or their associated safety equipment.  During the check, the vessel examiner will discuss with the recreational boater the purpose of specific marine safety equipment, will clarify various federal and state regulations, and will discuss certain safety procedures and practices including the use of charts, aids to navigation, float plans, and accident reporting/owner responsibility.  The examiner will be able to answer any of your safety-related questions.

Can I have a VSC performed on my vessel?
Yes.  Every year, Squadrons visit boat owners at their marinas.  You can request your own VSC, or ask to have a certified Vessel Examiner visit your marina, yacht club, or community dock.
